God of War (2005) is an action-adventure and hack-and-slash title developed by Santa Monica Studio under director David Jaffe and published by Sony Computer Entertainment. Released in North America on March 22, 2005 (Europe July 8, 2005; Japan November 17, 2005), it is the first mainline entry in the God of War series and is set in a world loosely inspired by Greek mythology.
The player controls Kratos, a pale-skinned Spartan warrior known as the Ghost of Sparta. After years of service to the Olympian gods, Kratos is tasked by Athena with stopping Ares, the God of War, who is destroying Athens. To gain the power needed to kill a god, Kratos must locate and open Pandora’s Box. Flashbacks reveal that Ares once tricked Kratos into killing his own wife and daughter, binding their ashes to his skin and fueling his endless rage.
Gameplay centers on third-person combo-based combat using the Blades of Chaos—chain-attached blades fused to Kratos’ forearms—allowing sweeping, multi-target attacks and aerial maneuvers. Players collect red orbs to upgrade weapons and magic (Zeus’ Fury, Medusa’s Gaze, Poseidon’s Rage, and Army of Hades). A secondary weapon, the Blade of Artemis, is acquired later. Quick-time events enable brutal finishers on stronger foes and bosses such as the Hydra and Pandora’s Guardian. Platforming, climbing, swimming, and puzzle-solving are woven throughout the linear yet spectacular levels that take players from a siege of Athens to the massive Temple of Pandora on the back of the Titan Cronos.
The game emphasizes cinematic presentation, fixed and dynamic camera angles, over-the-top violence, and a dark, revenge-driven narrative. It supports single-player only and runs on DVD-ROM media with progressive scan and widescreen options. God of War sold millions of copies, earned widespread critical praise, and laid the foundation for the entire franchise.
The game follows Kratos, a Spartan warrior serving the gods of Olympus. Athena tasks him with defeating Ares, who is attacking Athens. Kratos must retrieve Pandora’s Box to gain the power to kill a god. Flashbacks show how Ares tricked Kratos into murdering his own family, the source of his rage and the ashes covering his skin.
A standard first playthrough on Normal difficulty typically lasts 8–10 hours. Higher difficulties and completion of challenges can extend playtime.
Kratos’ primary weapons are the Blades of Chaos. Later he obtains the Blade of Artemis. He also gains four magical powers: Zeus’ Fury (lightning bolts), Medusa’s Gaze (petrification), Poseidon’s Rage (area lightning), and Army of Hades (summoned souls). All can be upgraded with red orbs.
