Ico is a 2001 action-adventure game developed by Team Ico (Sony Computer Entertainment Japan) and published by Sony Computer Entertainment for the PlayStation 2. Directed, designed, and artistically led by Fumito Ueda, it was released in North America on September 25, 2001, Japan on December 6, 2001, and Europe on March 22, 2002.
The story follows Ico, a young boy born with horns that mark him as cursed in his village. As tradition demands, he is taken to an ancient, abandoned castle and sealed inside a stone sarcophagus to be sacrificed. An earthquake frees him, and he soon encounters Yorda, a silent princess imprisoned by the castle’s Queen. The two must work together to escape the fortress while avoiding shadow creatures that try to drag Yorda away.
Gameplay centers on third-person exploration and environmental puzzle-solving within the sprawling castle. The player controls Ico, who can climb, jump, push objects, and pull levers. Yorda cannot perform most of these actions, so the player must create paths for her, lower platforms, open doors she can activate with her unique power, and frequently hold her hand to guide her safely. Combat is minimal and secondary—Ico fights shadowy enemies primarily to protect Yorda rather than for experience or loot. The game features almost no dialogue, no traditional HUD, and a strong emphasis on atmosphere, light, and the emotional connection between the two protagonists.
Ico is celebrated for its distinctive visual style (including early use of bloom lighting), key-frame animation, and quiet, fairy-tale-like narrative. It is considered a spiritual predecessor to Shadow of the Colossus and later received an HD remaster for PlayStation 3.
Ico, a boy born with horns and marked for sacrifice, is imprisoned in an ancient castle. He frees a mysterious girl named Yorda and the two attempt to escape while being pursued by the castle’s Queen and her shadow servants. The narrative is told with extreme minimalism, focusing on atmosphere and the growing bond between the two characters.
A standard playthrough typically takes about 6–8 hours. Completionists or players exploring thoroughly may spend closer to 8–10 hours.
No. Combat is secondary and relatively simple. The focus is on exploration, puzzle-solving, and protecting Yorda from shadow creatures that try to drag her into portals.
No. Ico is a standalone game and the earlier title. Shadow of the Colossus is a spiritual successor set in the same universe but does not require prior knowledge of Ico.
The challenge comes mainly from environmental puzzles and keeping Yorda safe rather than from combat or complex mechanics. Some platforming sections and later puzzles can be moderately demanding.
The original PlayStation 2 version is single-player only. A two-player mode was added in the European version and later in the PlayStation 3 HD remaster.
